NiCd Charger with Thermal Peak Detection - The electric model aircraft
and car industries have produced a bewildering array of field chargers for NiCd
motor battery packs. These range from simple 6 or 7 cell chargers consisting of a
resistor and mechanical timer, to more complex chargers with peak detection,
cycling, and the ability to handle 36 cell packs. The resistor/timer type of
charger is cheap, but it is has two drawbacks.... [Designed by Stefan Vorkoettert] |

NiMH Battery Charger Reference Design - This manual describes a
reference design for a NiMH battery charger that uses the Motorola
MC68H(R)C908JK3E MCU. The MC68H(R)C908JK3E includes a 10-channel Analog-to-Digital
Converter (ADC) and a 2-channel Timer Module which can be programmed....(app note

PIC NiCad Battery Charger - Circuit designed by Peter Hayles. This
cheap and easy to build NiCd/NiMH Battery Charger is suitable for automatically
charging a wide range of batteries for many applications. Proper chargers are
usually expensive and cheap chargers supplied with the original equipment often
incorrectly charge the cells and dramatically shorten their life....(added 10/05)

Portable Ni-Cd Battery Charger: Inexpensive Load Tolerant Step-Up Energy Source
- Zetec Semiconductors Applications Notes A relatively simple low
parts count topology is presented for a one transistor design, that allows "in the
field" re-charge of Ni-Cd battery packs from a convenient energy source such as an
automotive battery. The note includes transformer design and winding details.
Though designed for a specific case, the circuit and the principle employed should
lend itself to many other applications. (app note added 2/06)

Sanyo's USB Powered NiMH Charger - Late in 2006, I found out about
Sanyo's new Eneloop Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries, available
in AA and AAA cell sizes. Unlike regular NiMH offerings from other vendors (e.g.
Duracell, Energizer, Gold Peak), Sanyo claimed the following benefits for their
Eneloops:... [Stefan Vorketter's web site] |

Switching Current Pump Makes Better Charger - 01/16/97 EDN-Design Ideas
Many currently proposed battery-charger designs are simply voltage regulators
redesigned to be current sources. Unfortunately, this design approach is far from
optimal because it leads to unnecessary hardware redundancy and complexity.
This type of charger also raises a stability problem because of the additional
active device in the feedback loop....[Design Idea added 08/05] EDN migrating

Temperature Controlled NICD Charger - This circuit is for a temperature
controlled constant current battery charger. It works with NICD, NIMH, and other
rechargeable cells. The circuit works on the principle that most rechargeable
batteries show an increase in temperature when the cells becomes fully charged.
Overcharging is one of the main causes of short cell life, hot cells pop their
internal seals and vent out electrolyte. As cells dry out, they lose capacity. [G.

Universal Nicad/NiMH Battery Charger - Sometimes its more convenient to
recharge batteries 'in place' rather than removing them and putting them in an
external charger. This device is built around a PIC12F675 (a dandy little
part from Microchip). The number of cells ( 1 to 8 ) is programmed in using the
one button. The cell count….(electronic schematic added 06/09) |
