Lead Acid Battery Charger (LM317) -  The above pictured schematic diagram is just a standard constant current model with a added current limiter, consisting of Q1, R1, and R4.  The moment too much current is flowing biases Q1 and drops the output voltage. The output voltage is: 1.2 x (P1+R2+R3)/R3 volt.  Current limiting kicks in when the current is about 0.6/R1 amp.... [Tony van Roon's circuit]
Lead Acid Battery Charger using the PIC14c000 -  Microchip Application Note Published 26-Aug-97  (app note added 2/06)
Lead Acid Battery Charger with Float -  The circuit furnishes an initial charge voltage of 2.5 Volt-per-cell at 25°C to rapidly charge a Lead-Acid battery. The charging current decreases as the battery charges, and when the current drops to about 180mA, the charging circuit reduces the output voltage to 2.35 Volt-per-cell, floating the battery in a fully charged state. This lower voltage prevents the battery from overcharging, which would shorten its life.  The LM301A (Tony van Roon's U3) compares the voltage drop across R1 with an 18-mV reference set by R2.  The comparator's output controls the voltage regulator, forcing it to produce the lower float voltage when the battery-charging current passing....  [Tony van Roon's circuit]

Lead Acid Charger Gel Cell -  This high-performance circuit first quickly starts (Tony van Roon's and holds) the charge at 2 amp, but as the voltage rises the current will consequently decrease.  When the current falls below 150mA, the charger automatically switches to a lower 'Float' voltage to prevent overcharging. At the point that a full charge is reached, Q1 will bias and the LED will light…. [Tony van Roon's circuit]
Lead Acid Charger Signals End of Charge -  09/12/97 EDN-Design Ideas  The lead-acid battery charger in Figure 1 works with either gel- or wet-cell, lead-acid, 12V batteries. The charger includes the proper temperature compensation for the charger output voltage as well as a detector that signals when the battery is fully charged.... [Design Idea by Chester Simpson, National Semiconductor, Santa Clara, CA]
Lead acid trickle charger -  Schematic only, no circuit description
Lead-Acid Battery Charger with Voltage Analyser -  (electronic Circuit / Schematic added 10/04)
Motorcycle Battery Charger -  This 3A charger was originally designed to work with small batteries like those used in motorcycles. In principle it can be used to charge car batteries also but will take a lot longer. The charger below charges a battery with a constant current to 14.1 volt. When this level is reached, the current charge drops automatically to a safer level (13.6V) and keeps charging.... [Jan Hamer, The Netherlands]
New Battery Charger ICs Need No Heat Sinks -  DN124  Design Notes (Linear Technology) (app note added 2/06)
New Components & Design Methods Bring Intelligence to Battery Charger Applications -  Microchip Application Note Published 19-Nov-04  (app note added 2/06)
Optimizing High-Frequency Battery Charger Performance for Worldwide Applications -  07/06/00 EDN-Design Ideas  Providing Power for electric vehicles for worldwide use requires knowledge of energy conserving and high efficiency technologies....[Design Idea added 5/02] EDN migrating links.
