DAC and flip-flops form constant-current-source - 23-Apr-09
Issue of EDN Using two flip flops, you can program a
serial-input DAC to produce a constant 4 mA..... [Design Idea by
Marián Štofka, Slovak University of Technology, Bratislava, Slovakia] |

Derive a simple high-current-source from a lab supply -
16-Oct-08 Issue of EDN With a few additional components, you can
configure a laboratory power supply as a high-current source.....
[Design Idea by Roger Griswold and Alfredo Saab, Maxim Integrated
Products, Sunnyvale, CA] |

Digital current-source is nonvolatile - 7-Feb-02 Issue of
EDN Digitally programmable current sources that feature
automatic trimming and retain the setting despite power-down cycles
are useful in applications such as RF- and laser-communications
drivers..... [Design Idea by Stephen Woodward, University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill] |

Error compensation improves bipolar-current sinks - 6-Jul-06 Issue of
EDN Circuit compensates for pass-transistor's base-current error.....
[Design Idea by Christian de Godzinsky, Planmeca Oy, Helsinki, Finland; Edited by
Brad Thompson and Fran Granville] |

High-speed regulator makes great current source - 07/16/98 EDN-Design
Ideas.....To power a load that requires a high-compliance current source (for
example, a plasma tube, such as an ion laser), a circuit must provide very
accurate current control with a wide bandwidth and a voltage compliance of several
hundred volts. You can use a high-speed linear-regulator.....File has several
circuits, please scroll to find this one..... [Design Idea by Craig Varga,
Linear Technology Corp, Milpitas, CA] |
|
JFET cascode boosts current-source performance - 11-May-06 Issue of EDN
A constant-current source minimizes the reference circuit's sensitivity to
supply-voltage fluctuations and extends the voltage reference's operating voltage
beyond its 5.5V maximum rating..... [Design Idea by Clayton B Grantham, Tucson,
AZ; Edited by Brad Thompson and Fran Granville] |

Linear Constant Current LED Lamp Dimmer - This circuits drives24 white
light LEDs with an adjustable constant current. (added 4/02) |
|
Low-Overhead Current Source - This circuit has a very low overhead of
just 120uA, and most of that is transistor base drive. The voltage reference only
uses 20uA of current. Also, the circuit is designed to saturate if required, to
maintain output current. The overhead current quickly goes up at that point.
This circuit is ideal for squeezing out the last bit of battery power for an LED
circuit. [Designed by Andrew R. Morris (added 09/05)] |
|
PC Controlled Voltage or Current Source - Fair Waring, site contains
annoying popups. This project was begun as a means to charge and cycle NiCad
batteries but has become a versatile tool for experiments requiring either a
controlled voltage up to +30V and/or a current of +/2.5 Amps. (added 5/05)

Precision Current Sink Costs Less Than $20 - 03/13/98 EDN-Design
Ideas..... Simple active load circuit for current from1 mA to1A and voltage from3
to40-Volt..... [Design Idea by Carlos Barberis, Bartek Technologies, Haverhill,
MA] |
|
Precision current-source is software programmable - 17-Dec-04 Issue of
EDN With the addition of a few inexpensive miniature components, the
hard-wired, voltage-controlled current source of yesterday becomes a
software-programmable voltage-controlled current source (Figure 1]. A digital
potentiometer, IC1 in conjunction with a precision op amp, IC2, sets current
through a pass transistor, ISET, and a shunt regulator, IC3, provides a constant
reference voltage across..... [Design Idea by Joe Neubauer, Maxim Integrated
Products Inc, Sunnyvale, CA] |
|
Reference stabilizes exponential current - 25-Oct-01 Issue of EDN
In an antilog converter, the difference between the base voltages of two
transistors sets the ratio of their collector currents The use of matched
transistors balances the first-order temperature coefficient but leaves a
temperature-dependent gain term, q/kT. Classic antilog circuits use a thermistor
in the drive circuitry to correct this temperature dependency..... [Design Idea by
Tom Napier, North Wales, PA] |
