Driving out complexity with abstraction tools - 06/24/04 EDN-Design
Ideas.....Complexity is relative. It can prevent you from solving a problem if you
can't characterize and understand the problem within a specific context. At the same
time, it provides an opportunity to differentiate your product offerings..... [Design
Idea by Robert Cravotta, Technical Editor -- EDN] |

Driving White LEDs - The 555 is capable of sinking and sourcing up to 200mA,
but it gets very hot when doing this on a 12v supply. The following circuit
shows the maximum number of white LEDs that can be realistically driven from a 555 and
we have limited the total current to about 130mA as each LED is designed to pass about
17mA to 22mA maximum. A white LED drops a characteristic 3.2v to 3.6v and this means
only 3 LEDs can be placed in series. |
Dual Relay Driver Board - We have used two Goodsky RWH-SH-112D 12V relays,
coil resistance 400 ohm. It is rated to switch 250VAC at 12A. However, because of the
PCB track thickness and width we do not recommend using the
relay to switch more than 5A. If you….(electronic schematic added 08/08) |

Dual Stepping Motor drivers using UDN2540 - In this design we use two
UDN2540B to drive two stepping motors at the same speed. Each motor can be
independently controlled. The S1, S2 switches control the ON/OFF and the moving
direction of Motor1. The S3, S4 control the Motor2, respectively.....(electronic

Economical Circuit Drives White LEDs - 11/23/00 EDN-Design Ideas.....Newly
available white LEDs are replacing CCFLs (cold-cathode fluorescent lamps] in handheld
applications using a back-lit LCD. These applications include PDAs (personal digital
assistants], digital cameras, and cellular telephones, to name a few. Advantages of
white LEDs over CCFLs include longer life, higher efficiency, and significantly lower
operating voltages.....PDF has many circuits, scoll to find this one..... [Design Idea

Embedded processor directly drives LCD - 9-Jan-03 Issue of EDN Driving
a bare LCD does not necessarily require specialized interface circuitry or
peripherals. This Design Idea describes an alternative drive scheme, which you
can easily implement using the general-purpose outputs of a microcontroller. Many
embedded-system applications need to interact with a user by displaying simple numeric
or alphanumeric characters..... [Design Idea by Daniel Malik, Motorola, Czech

Fast precision LED driver - The circuit allows a precision regulated drive
current to be set to drive an LED, and in response to a TTL level signal, the LED is
switched on and off with rise and fall times of less than 500 nanoseconds and less
than 7% overshoot. This was designed for biological experiments to study the
photo repsonse of cone cells rabbit eyes.....(schematic / circuit added 6/07)

Feedback circuit eliminates CCD-driver delay mismatch - 18-Sep-03 Issue of
EDN In a CCD (charge-coupled device], packets of charges shift across the array.
The transistor array, also called a bucket-brigade shift register, receives drive from
a dual-phase clock signal. Dual-phase clock signals comprise two synchronized clock
signals that are 180° out of phase. High peak-output-current CCD drivers can buffer
the logic-level clock signals and turn them into high-voltag..... [Design Idea by Mike

Flyback Transformer Driver - This is by far the best project for someone who
is already familiar with High Voltage, but wants to take their experiments to the next
level: It requires very little previous experience and skills with soldering and
identifying components, and there are virtually no adjustments to be made. The danger
is minimal, as fly back transformers are intrinsically low power devices, not capable
of outputting lethal currents (due to the hair-thin secondary windings),
and.....(circuit added 09/08) |
Flyback Transformer Driver (Jonathan Filippi) - This is an efficient flyback
driver for modern cylindrical rectified television flybacks. Many sites doesn't
provide circuits driving these transformers, they simply say that they are bad.

Frequency source feeds entire lab - 23-Jan-03 Issue of EDN Plumbing a
laboratory with a standard frequency makes a lot of sense if the lab uses multiple
frequency counters, spectrum analyzers, and other frequency-dependent test equipment.
Rather than spending time keeping all of the instruments' oscillators in calibration
or buying expensive, high-precision oscillators, you can use the circuit in Figure 1
to distribute a single calibrated frequency sou..... [Design Idea by Mitchell Lee,

Glowplug Driver for Radio Control - An on/off switch is not required for the
glowplug driver since it only draws current when a glowplug is attached. As a matter
of fact, the circuit is only powered (via Q1) via a connected glowplug. Just in case
you were wondering how the positive (+) side of the circuit is connected. The starter
motor runs directly from the flight box battery, via the jacks on the power-panel, and
has it's own on/off switch. Same scenario for the fuel pump, but includes a reverse
switch to pump the fuel in or out the tank/cannister.…. [Tony van Roon's circuit] |
