Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • 1 WATT FLUORESCENT LAMP NIGHT LIGHT
If you are tired of replacing small night light lamps, try this circuit. The line powered circuit uses a long life cold cathode fluorescent lamp. A simple charge pump technique runs the lamp without any transformer.

  • 5W FLUORESCENT LAMP INTENSITY MODULATOR
The circuit was designed to experiment with using small fluorescent lamps as a broad pattern source of modulated light. The circuit hits the small lamp with narrow 1us pulses at a rate of 10KHz. Each pulse launches about 10 watts of visible light. The lamp starting method is a bit crude but the circuit does work.
  • 60 Watt Lamp with Auxiliary 14v LED Lamp
This circuit controls power to a standard 60 watt lamp plus generates an auxiliary 14v DC supply which can power an automotive style 12 LED array.  (added 7/06)

3 Channel-Color Organ -  An old ideabut I've had numerous requests for a good design for this.....(electronic schematic added 12/08)
3rd Brake Light -  This circuit is NOT a pulser or flasher! What's so special about this circuit? Well, the first third-brake light I installed I had to pull a wire from the Third Brake Light all the way underneath the carpet to the brake-pedal-switch and I thought it would be easier to pluck the signal of both brakelights via the trunk. Bench-test your circuit first and apply power to the circuit,.... [Tony van Roon's circuit]
3rd Brake Light Pulser -  Several years ago these flashers were introduced in the automotive industry as part of the third brake light and contained strobe lights (and strobing continuously for the duration of pressing the break pedal) but got abandoned almost immediately sometime later because of the 'strobe' effect it has on some people.  This circuit has become obsolet since much better circuits are available these days without the 'lag' in between brakes caused by R4 and C3. One of the circuits is listed below.…. [Tony van Roon's circuit]
3V LED Chaser -  ….(electronic schematic added 03/08)
3-Way Dimming CFL Ballast -   3 way dimming system widely adopted in  US with conventional filament lamps consists of a light bulb that has a modified Edison screw type base which allows 3 connections to be made to a special lamp socket that also has 3 connections.  (added 3/05)
4 Channel Dimmer Rack -  (electronic circuit added 7/03)
40 LED Bicycle Light 555 Timer 6 Volt -  The 555 circuit below is a flashing bicycle light powered with four C,D or AA cells (6 volts). Two sets of 20 LEDs will alternately flash at approximately 4.7 cycles per second using RC values shown (4.7K for R1, 150K for R2 and a 1uF capacitor). Time intervals for the two lamps are about 107 milliseconds (T1, upper LEDs) and 104 milliseconds (T2 lower LEDs).....(circuit / schematic design added 6/06)
40 Watt Fluorescent Lamp Inverter (Aaron Cake) -  This40W fluorescent lamp inverter allows you to run40W fluorescent tubes from any12V source capable of delivering3A. (added 04/03/02)
42 Watt Compact Fluorescent Ballast -   CFL-2 is an electronic ballast design for driving a 42 watt compact fluorescent lamp from a 120 or 230 volt AC line.  circuit was designed using  IR2156 Ballast Driver IC.  main features of  circuit are programmable frequency, preheat time, over-current threshold and dead time.  (added 3/05)
4-channel dimmer rack -  This document describes my light dimmer project I have made.  This document is not.....(electronic circuit added 04/05/06)
5W Fluorescent Lamp Intensity Modulator -  The circuit was designed to experiment with using small fluorescent lamps as a broad pattern source of modulated light. The circuit hits the small lamp with narrow 1us pulses at a rate of 10KHz. Each pulse launches about 10 watts of visible light. The lamp starting method is a bit crude but the circuit does work..... 60 Watt Lamp with Auxiliary 14v LED Lamp -  This circuit controls power to a standard 60 watt lamp plus generates an auxiliary 14v DC supply which can power an automotive style 12 LED array.  (added 7/06) …. [Designed by David A. Johnson]
73 MHz Hallogene Lamp Radio-Controlled -  …..... [Site is under construction right now]
8 Bit Digital Light Intensity Controller -  (design circuit added 8/02)
8 Photo-Detector Circuit -  There are two versions of the "8 Photo-Detector" circuitboard. Circuitboards and parts are available for both versions of this circuit..... [from Rob Paisley's Model Train web site]
8W Fluorescent Lamp Inverter: Compact DC-to-AC Inversion for Efficient Lighting Systems -  Zetec Semiconductors  Applications Notes An enhanced TO92 packaged one transistor design that uses a minimum of components, and yet achieves performance and efficiency normally associated with much larger packaged switching transistors. The design is optimised to provide a fast turn-off condition for  transistor, reby allowing  inclusion.....(app note added 2/06)
9 Second LED Relay Timer -  This circuit provides a visual 9 second delay using a 7 segment digital readout LED. When the switch is closed, the CD4010 up/down counter is preset to 9 and the 555 timer is disabled with the output held high. When the switch is opened,… [Bill Bowden]
