LED-Current Limiter Accepts AC or Dc -  07/14/11  EDN Design Idea   Prevent excessive current from overdriving your LEDs. LED drivers have lots of features and require plenty of external components. When your application requires no PWM (pulse-width-modulated) dimming or controlled frequency operation, your primary concern may be that too much current could damage or destroy your LEDs. In this case, you can make a simple LED-current limiter from a common low-dropout linear regulator. The circuit in Figure 1 is an LED light bulb for a landscape-lighting system. Landscape lighting typically operates from 12V ac, and peak voltage is approximately 17V. Because the regulator is in series with the LED string, the LED-string current equals the regulator’s output current. . .  [by Roger Griswold]

LED-Current Limiting Resistor Calculator -  The calculators on this page can be used to find current limiting resistors and currents for Light Emitting Diodes. The first calculator determines the resistance for a desired LED current while the second calculates the current for a given resistance. . . .  [from Rob Paisley's Model Train web site]

Limits DV/DTand Capacitor inrush at Regulator Turn On -  11-Oct-07 EDN Design Idea   Adding a simple circuit to the adjust pin of a regulator controls the dV/dt of the output voltage, limiting inrush current. . .  [by W Stephen Woodward, Chapel Hill, NC]

Over Voltage Protection for LM317 -  It is a voltage regulator that allows a 6v portable supply to be derived from the 12v car battery. You can add a 6. 2V zener diode and a LED to warn you when the input supply is overvoltage. If you could find a relay that would operate from 6. 2v right up to 12v that you could connect in such a way that if over voltage occurred, . . .  [submitted by Adam]

Over-/Under-Voltage Protection of Electrical Appliances -  This circuit protects refrigerators as well as other appliances from over and under-voltage. Operational amplifier IC LM324 (IC2) is used here as a comparator. IC LM324 consists of four operational Amplifiers, of which only two operational Amplifiers (N1 and N2) are used in the circuit. . . .  [© EFY Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. All rights reserved]

Passive circuit limits inrush current -  09/26/02  EDN Design Idea   You would normally limit the inrush current during start-up of a rectifier circuit with a capacitor output filter by using the circuit in Figure 1.
