hall effect sensor

I'm thinking about building a ROBOT Lawnmower and using a couple hall effect sensors for guidence by putting rare earth magnets at ground level (set in a pattern\track)

now my Q is this .... can the course of the Lawnmower be corrected just by using hall effect sensors spaced 4 or 5 inches apart .... compare the two signals and correct course or…..maybe using three {3} hall effect sensors will be an easy'r build

This kind of system is a lot more complex than you think. Putting magnets in the ground does not really tell you much. What happens when the mower misses a magnet?

One of my clients has been selling a neat robotic lawn mower for several years. They use GPS and a scanning laser with carefully positioned reflectors to help keep the mower's exact location. Look at their system. It might give you some ideas.
