hello I need a suggestion on what can be wrong with my laptop:

I inserted my dvd modular drive into the laptop while it was on and on windows xp, the pc crashed inmediately, after this I restarted and everything seemed to be fine for a while but every short period of time 10-15min the pc locks up exactly as it did before, like I would leave me for 10min and come back and nothing move no mouse no keyboard nothing can't even shut it down. Would anyone suggest me the problem so I can buy the replacement part.

When you say modular, do you mean external or internal?

If you mean internal (you said you put it "into the laptop") while it was on, you probably caused a lot of damage. Never add any internal component to a computer while it is powered on. Something that resulted from that is most probably the reason that your computer crashed (hopefully just OS specific and no fried circuitry).

Troubleshooting:
Powerdown computer, boot up and see if you have problems. If you don't you can try to reinstall your dvd drive (with the power off). If you do have problems, use a winxp recovery disk (hopefully came with your laptop). If, after you recover, you still have problems, I would guess that the problem lies within the circuitry and I would recommend bringing it to a PC shop.

Goodluck, man.

I realize that this post is from a while back, but gonna throw my two cents in... I have a simular problem, and know what it is. the latch that holds my DVD drive in place is a little lose, so if I move my laptop the "wrong" way, it will freeze up. Try to push the drive in a little further, or pull out and make sure ALL connections / pins are straight and clear. This only happens with my DVD drive, the CD-ROM drive works fine no matter how I move the laptop.
