RS-232 to Wireless Instrument Data Channel
This is an adapter that allows a terminal to communicate via a 100 MHz data channel with peripherals on the same desk top. Keystrokes from the terminal are are received through the RS-232 connection and sent through the 100 MHz RF data channel. See the page, Digital Wireless for the Desktop, on this site, for the basics of the transmitter, receiver, and data format. The reason I made this was to make a simple method of switching between instruments on my desktop. I was staring to accumulate a number of microcontroller-based devices that I want to be able to switch my computer among quickly and this provided the simplest desktop networking solution I could think of. __ Designed by Dick Cappels RS-232 Transceiver with Automatic Power Shutdown Control

RS-232: Lowe Hf-225 Interface
If you have access to a Lowe HF-225 shortwave receiver, then you might be interested in this page. If you don't, then you'd probably be better off leaving now. What follows is a project I completed some time ago, which allows the Lowe HF-225 to be controlled from a PC, or other device with an available RS232 port. The Rx has an input for a remote keypad, and, consequently, was begging for me to hook my PC up to it. I don't feel the need to spell out the advantages, __ Contact: void @ blankfrank.co.uk
RS-232C handshake lines transfer data frame
10/23/97 EDN-Design Ideas The asynchronous RS-232C interface is a simple, low-cost option for interconnecting processor-based systems, but this character-oriented interface supports no direct mechanism to transfer variable-sized messages as self-contained data packets. RS-232C has galvanic isolation
04-Feb-99 EDN-Design Ideas NOTE
: File has several circuits, scroll to this one. Galvanic, or electrical, isolation is a well-established technique for noise reduction and works best in computer and industrial systems in which noise can seriously affect data transfer. Isolation removes ground-loop currents and their associated noise voltages from data lines Design by Ioan Ciascai, REI Data, Napoca, Romania

RS-232C link Monitors animal activity
11/06/97 EDN-Design Ideas A common need in biological experimentation is the ability to unobtrusively monitor the activity of small caged animals, such as mice, rats, and rabbits, as they move about their enclosures. This monitoring must be over long periods and around the clock. The circuit in Design by W Stephen Woodward, University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill
RS-232C Multiplexer Serves as Multiport Adapter
03/01/96 EDN-Design Ideas Multiport RS-232C PC add-on boards are intended for intensive multichannel communication. Therefore, each serial port has its own transmission controller. If your application doesn't need interrupt-driven service, and polling the devices through RS-232C channels one after another is sufficient, then you can use a single controller with switched input and output signals instead of installing a costly multiport adapter. RS232C Powers & Reads 8 Bit Switch Matrix
04/11/96 EDN-Design Ideas The circuit in Figure 1 provIdeas a remote menu-selection switch matrix for PCs. It connects a linear, 8-bit switch to the RS-232C port; the RS-232C signal pins provide the circuit's frugal power requirements. You can easily modify the circuit to read more switch inputs. The heart of the circuit is a 74HC165 8-bit, serial-output shift register. It's important that you use either this register or a similar one from a low-power IC family. The shift register has eight parallel-input pins that receive their drive from an 8-bit DIP-switch matrix. Design by BR Dhananjay Gadre, IUCAA, Pune, India

RS-485 Repeater Extends Standard's Reach
05/26/94 EDN-Design Ideas RS-485 specifies communications for distances up to 4000 ft. This limit is the consequence of losses in the twisted pair used to carry the data.
