Simple Logic Probe uses Bicolor LED:  03/13/98 EDN-Design Ideas / (added 03/03)

Simple Logic Reduces Emi:  08/05/99 EDN Design Ideas / (added 0505) A current-input ADC whose primary use is measuring low-level signals from photodetectors can also measure a range of voltages using the circuit in Figure 1. The main component is a dual-input current-integrating ADC, IC1. IC2 and IC3 provide the buffered 4.096V reference for IC1. The figure does not include a µC, which typically oversees the digital control and data retrieval.

Simple Low Cost Digital Code Lock:  (electronic Circuit / Schematic added 10/04)

Simple Setup Tests Bit Error Rate:  03/18/04 EDN Design Ideas  /  (added 1/05)  Traditionally, the reception quality of a digital receiver is expressed in terms of BER (bit-error rate). This figure is the proportion of received bit errors in a given period. Typically, you measure the BER in the lab by applying an RF signal, modulated by a pseudorandom code, to the receiver under test....

Simple Voltmeter Monitors TTL Supplies:  National Semiconductor Application Note   (app note added 6/06)

Simplify Computer Aided Engineering with Scientific to Engineering Conversion:  09/30/04 EDN Design Ideas  /  (added 1/05)  The simple yet useful formula in this Design Idea enables conversion from scientific format (for example, 2.2-9), which is typical for CAE (computer-aided-engineering), double-precision output values, into "human-friendly" engineering format (for example, 2.2 nF). The engineering format is more suitable for bills of material and other electrical and electronic-engineering documents and specific......

Simplifying External Memory Connections of PIC17cxxx Picmicro ® Microcontrollers:  Microchip Application Note Published 23-Aug-99   (app note added 2/06)

Single Switch Controls digital potentiometer #1:  02/07/02  EDN Design Ideas / (added 6/06)    The control of electronic potentiometers in most today's applications comes from controller-generated signals. However, a significant number of applications exist that require adjustments using manual, front-panel controls. The circuit in Figure 1 uses one IC, one switch, and 10 discrete components. .

Single Switch Controls digital potentiometer #2:  09/19/02  EDN Design Ideas / (added 6/06)   This Design Idea is an evolution and simplification of another (Figure 1, Reference 1). Replacing the three inverted-input NOR gates with their logical equivalents, positive-input NAND gates, makes these three gate symbols consistent with the fourth, which was drawn as a positive-input NAND gate. The 74HC132's data sheet describes the device as a quad, two-input NAND gate with hysteresis..

Speedy Logic Translator uses Little Power:  07/08/99 EDN Design Ideas  / (added 6/06)  [Note: File contains multiple circuits.  Scroll to find this one.]  In handheld equipment, component count and power consumption are critical considerations. This Design Idea uses only a few transistors to configure a high-speed output stage of an RS-232C link while draining few precious milliamperes from the batteries. In general, the data to transmit comes from an IC (for example, an ADC or a µC) connected to 5V and ground. The RS-232C protocol requires ±12V transmission levels. You can derive the voltages directly from the RS-232C line of a computer with a simple diode circuit. You need a charge pump only in the case of a direct connection to a printer because the 12 and –12V may not be available simultaneously....

System Implements Digital Clock Modulation :  10/28/04 EDN Design Ideas  / (added 11/05)  In spread-spectrum and direct-sequence receivers, it's often necessary to change the frequency of the clock oscillator, and thus the spreading-code clock, to lock the receiver's reference pseudorandom-noise code to the incoming code. The original design used a VCXO (voltage-controlled crystal oscillator) for this function, but this revised design implements an all-digital method that provided a...
