Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • FINGER TOUCH ACTIVATED SWITCH
It does not get any easier if you want a solid state switch that is activated by the touch of a finger. Two small metal pins route voltage through the finger skin to a MOSFET switch. The circuit is great for situations where a membrane type mechanical switch is not desired.

  • Infrared Safety Switch
Using a slotted optical sensor, this circuit can be used as a replacement for a large mushroom pushbutton safety switch.

Some alternative ways to read keys yield more free pins. First, consider some ways to effect key reading. Latching Power Switch uses momentary action pushbutton:  10/28/04 EDN Design Ideas  / (added 11/05)  Most inexpensive pushbutton switches, particularly pc-board-mounting and membrane types, have momentary action. Latching types are often larger and relatively expensive, and they frequently are unavailable in the style you'd like to use. You can thus have a problem if you need a small, inexpensive on/off switch for latching power to a load.

Low Power keypad consumes only 100 nA:  01/24/02  EDN - Design Ideas / (Electronic circuit added 10/03)    Often in the use of products with keypads, one or more keys become "stuck" or are being pressed. For example, a cell phone in the bottom of a purse or in a hip pocket could have one or more of its keys inadvertently pressed and held down for a considerable period. Depending on the circuit design and implementation of the keypad interface, this condition could cause excess current to flow,... .
