80188XL Engine Tachometer / Race Computer -  The objective of this project is to design a high speed digital engine tachometer.  This requires the design and development of a hardware and software solution to monitor the status of an engine in real time.  in addition, information relating to the overall health and systems of the vehicle can be displayed.   __ Designed by Stephen Manley-smanley @ nyx.net

Circuit Measures Diesel's Rotations Per Minute -  03/04/99 EDN Design Ideas:  (Scroll to find this one) The circuit in Figure 1 uses a Dallas Semiconductor DS1820 one-wire digital thermometer in a multipoint temperature-measurement system.  The DS1820 sensor allows distributed temperature measurement and uses only one wire for both data communication and the power supply.  You can easily connect the one-wire interface to a µC (in this example, a PIC 16C63).  The application accommodates as many as 16 DS1820 sensors in a 100m-long network, dubbed MicroLAN by Dallas.  Unfortunately, with such long wires near high-current power cables, inductively coupled high-voltage peaks can cause µC latch-up, because the transient-voltage suppressor, D1, cannot limit the line voltage below 9.8V.  The interface circuit in Figure 1 prevents such faults.   Design by David Magliocco, CDPI, Scientrier, France

Combination Tachometer, Thermometer & Counter -  inspired by the need to measure dc motor speed and detect overheating, this 68HC908KX8 microcontroller-based circuit displays various statistics on six-digit, eight-segment, numeric LEDs.  See movies of a thermistor in action as well as a reflective or interrupt-based photosensor counting.   __ Contact David Cook

LED Strobe & Contactless Tachometer -  This versatile LED Strobe & Tachometer can be used to observe and measure the RPM of rotating machinery.  it offers three different measurement methods and the readout is via a 2-line LCD module.__ SiliconChip

Led Strobe & Tacho Pt.2 -  Last month, we published the circuit of our new LED Strobe & Tachometer and showed how to build the main unit and the strobe light.  This month, we describe the assembly of the optional Photo-interruptor and IR Reflector Amplifier boards.  We also describe how the unit is used.__ SiliconChip

LED Tachometer with Dual Displays, Pt.1 -  A responsive and accurate tachometer is essential for motoring enthusiasts.  This new unit features a bright 4-digit display plus a 32-LED circular bargraph.  The LED bargraph responds rapidly to changes in RPM while the digital display shows accurate RPM readings with a steady throttle.__ SiliconChip

Measures diesel's rotations per minute -  03/04/99 EDN Design Ideas:  (Scroll to find this one) The circuit in Figure 1 uses a Dallas Semiconductor DS1820 one-wire digital thermometer in a multipoint temperature-measurement system.

Microcontroller-Based Tachometer -  A tachometer is nothing but a simple electronic digital transducer.  Normally, it is used for measuring the speed of a rotating shaft.  The number of revolutions per minute (rpm) is valuable...__ Electronics Projects for You

Optical tachometer provides bidirectional info -  05/21/98 Design ideas - (Multiple circuits listed, scroll to find this one) Optical tachometers have many advantages in precision servo applications.  Compared with dc-generator types, optical tachs are relatively inexpensive and, because they lack wear-prone commutator brushes, they're long-lived.  Frequency-to-voltage conversion circuits provide a convenient means to integrate the output of optical tachs into analog, unidirectional motion-control loops.  However, for bidirectional servos, where you need a bipolar angular-velocity readout, you need a more unconventional solution, such as the circuit in Figure 1.    Design by Stephen Woodward, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Simple Circuit Measures Diesel's Rotations Per Minute -  03/04/99 EDN Design Ideas:  You may find it useful to measure a diesel engine's rotations per minute to accurately adjust the idling or to compare the motor's speed under hot and cold conditions, for example.  Not all cars or trucks come with a tachometer.  The scheme in Figures 1 and 2 allows Design by David Magliocco, CDPI, Scientrier, France
