Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • Solar Cell Test Fixture
If you are considering building your own solar panel, you might try building the solar cell tester shown below. When constructing a solar panel it is important to make sure that all the solar cells used in the panel be closely matched for their short circuit current. One weak cell will lower the efficiency of the whole panel. The system shown allows individual solar cells to be tested for their short circuit current under a constant light intensity condition....
  • Solar PV cell Test Fixture
This is an illustration of a test fixture, which can be used to test individual solar cells for short circuit current.  Using a PIN photo diode and a control circuit, the solar cells can be tested under constant light level conditions. A halogen incandescent lamp is used as the light source. (added 7/06)

Scheme Detects Shorts -  07/08/99 EDN-Design Ideas....[Note  File contains multiple circuits.  Scroll to find this one.]  When you manually assemble complex boards, it's common to short-circuit adjacent component or IC pins. Determining which section of the circuit you have shorted is not too difficult, but finding the precise point.... EDN is migrating links. Scheme provides high-side current-sensing for white-LED drivers -  19-Feb-04 Issue of EDN  White LEDs find wide use in backlighting color-LCD screens in most portable devices, such as cellular phones, PDAs, and MP3 players. Multiple LEDs often connect in series to ensure that the same current flows through every LED. To forward-bias these LEDs, a voltage of 10 to 16V comes from an inductor-based boost regulator, such as an SP6690.... [Design Idea by Dimitry Goder, Sipex Corp, San Jose, CA]

Self Oscillating Amplifier for Distortion Testing -  allows the home constructor to make quite accurate measurements, without having to spend a lot of money on a low distortion oscillator (added 5/02)
Self-powered Fast Battery-Tester -  Tests 1.5 to 15 Volt cells.  Two-LED display, no power supply required.  (electronic circuit added 06/07/08)

Serial port tests digital circuits -  25-Jun-09 Issue of EDN  The circuit in Figure 1 uses a MAX232 IC from Maxim to convert RS-232 voltage levels to TTL levels (Reference 1]. A 74HC4051 from Texas Instruments lets you select any of four digital inputs and route them to the serial port (Reference 2]. Listing 1 lets you control the RTS (ready-to-send] and DTR (data-terminal-ready] pins in the serial port that selects the signal under test.... [Design Idea by Yury Magda, Cherkassy, Ukraine]
SerialPort tests Digital circuits -  The schematic in Figure 1 (shown at the end of this article) uses a MAX232 IC to convert RS-232 voltage levels to TTL-logic levels. A 74HC4051 multiplexer lets you select any of four digital inputs and route them to the serial port. Software available from the online version of this article lets you control the RTS (ready to send) and DTR (data terminal ready) pins in the serial port that select the signal under test. The CTS (clear to send) pin then reads the signal under test into the PC....(Test Ideas. Test & Measurement World 4/01/2009)
Servo Tester -  This circuit can be used to manually turn a servo clockwise and anti-clockwise.  By pushing the forward or reverse button for a short period of time you can control the rotation of the servo. It will also test a servo….
Set/Reset Flip Flop -  This is an example of a set/reset flip flop using discrete components. When power is applied, only one of the transistors will conduct causing the other to remain off. The conducting transistor can be turned off by grounding it's base through the push button which causes the collector voltage to rise and turn on the opposite transistor. Setup Tests Bit Error Rate -  03/18/04 EDN-Design Ideas....Traditionally, the reception quality of a digital receiver is expressed in terms of BER (bit-error rate].  This figure is the proportion of received bit errors in a given period. Typically, you measure the BER in the lab by applying an RF signal, modulated by a pseudorandom code, to the receiver under test.... EDN is migrating links. Short-Circuit Finder uses Few Parts -  11/05/98 EDN-Design Ideas....The simple tester in Figure 1  detects short circuits on assembled pc boards and also rings out cables and harnesses. The short finder has a narrow zone of threshold uncertainty and very low "insertion" voltage and current, and it's not confused by capacitors. The circuit uses an LM10, an IC that combines a precision 200-mV reference,….contains several circuits, scroll to find this one…. [Design Idea by Boris Khaykin, Candid Logic Inc, Madison Heights, WI]
Short-Circuit Protection for Boost Regulators -  DN154  Design Notes (Linear Technology) (app note added 1/06)
Shunt Ammeter Circuit -  The Circuit is for a 'Shunt' type ammeter that allows a meter movement with a small current rating to be used to measure a much larger current. In this example 1 milliamp through the meter coil will represent 1.5 amps by shunting most of the current through the 0.1 Ohm resistor. [from Rob Paisley's Model Train web site]
