Software snippet provides improved subset-sum algorithm - 25-Sep-03 Issue of
EDN The subset-sum problem is one of the most frequently occurring NP
(nondeterministic, polynomial-time]-complete] problems. It asks whether a subset of
numbers in a set of positive integers adds up exactly to a given value. A relaxed
version of the problem tries to identify a subset of numbers that adds up to a maximum
value no greater than a given value.... [Design Idea by Ivan Basov, Brandeis
University, Waltham, MA] |

Software speeds 8051 RS-232C receiver - 12/04/97 EDN-Design Ideas This
method allows for receiving data from a half-duplex, 9600-bps or faster serial link in
an 8051-based system without using a hardware UART. The method's goal is to minimize
performance degradation that software-service routines incur. Bit-cell time for
9600-bps transmission.... [Design Idea by Jerzy Chrzaszcz, Warsaw University of
Technology, Poland] |

Solar Charged LED Utility Light - Tired of always spending money on
flashlight batteries only to have them fail just when you need them? Try this simple
circuit out. It would make an excellent science fair project. The white LEDs are quite
bright, they provide enough light to illuminate a small room at night. The LEDs
produce a nicely focused beam. You can read by the light of this device. [G. Forrest
Cook] |

Solar Energy Meter - Turn 8051SBC to be a dedicated instrument for measuring
AC energy when sunshine. (circuit added 09/09) |
|
Solar power supply - This circuit delivers either 4.8 or 7.2 V regulated at
15 mA with a 3-V input from a bank of photocells. Rl should be 453 kQ for a 7.2-V
output and 274 Ø for a 4.8-Vdc output. Regulator efficiency is around 70%. This
should be considered when selecting suitable solar cells. |

Solar Powered Reading Lamp - The goal of this project was to produce a self
contained reading lamp that could be used by students in developing countries for
reading at night. The circuit can be used for a wide variety of lighting
applications..... [G. Forrest Cook] |

Sound Blaster Microphone Preamplifier - Dynamic microphones can be connected
to SoundBlaster if a suitable microphone preamplifier is built which can amplify the
signal levels from dynamic microphones so much that they give enough level for
SoundBlaster. This amplification can be quite easily done using simple single
transistor microphone preamplifier circuit....(electronic circuit added 8/02)

Sound Card Based Signal Generators - Previously, E-DSP visited the
possibility of using your sound card as a signal/function generator. I was curious
about the results, but did not have a Windows machine close by to test it. After some
searching, I found a Linux alternative and was able to test the limitations of my

Sound Card Interface with Tone Keyer - This is an improved version of the
audio interface commonly used to connect a computer soundcard to a transceiver's
receive and transmit audio circuits. This kind of interface is used by computer
programs that send and receive SSTV, RTTY, CW, PSK31 and various other digital modes
entirely in software. Soundcard interfaces are not data controllers, TNCs,
decoders....(added 4/05) |

Soundcard Joystick Port Problem Solver - Typical PC soundcards (for exampel
Sound Blaster family) has added MIDI interface to the joystick connector by using pin
12 for MIDI output and pin 15 for MIDI input. This causes sometimes problems
with some joysticks and adapters which work pefectly on standard joystick port. The
following conversion circuit enables standard joystick Y-cables....(schematic added
