Simple Circuit control shuts down data-acquisition system  -  One of the most effective ways to reduce circuit power is to shut down unused components.  Some circuits with power-shutdown capability reduce supply current 1000-fold compared with normal operation.  Placing data-conversion and support components in shutdown between conversions or when conversions are unnecessary significantly reduces supply current and average dissipation.    Design by Kevin Hoskins, Linear Technology Corp, Milpitas, CA

Square Root Function Improves Thermostat  -  09/30/99 EDN Design Ideas:  Perhaps the most elementary rule of control-loop design theory is that feedback-loop performance is fundamentally linked to the careful choice—and stability—of loop gain.  Insufficient loop gain leads to poor setpoint accuracy.  Too much gain can induce feedback instabilities,  Design by W Stephen Woodward, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC

Trace voltage-current curves on your PC  -  10/11/01 EDN Design Ideas:  Some years ago, one of the fundamental electronic instruments was the laboratory curve tracer.  A CRT display would sweep out terminal behavior (current versus voltage] from which you could derive mathematical models.  Classic present Design by Clayton Grantham, National Semiconductor, Tucson, AZ

Track multisite temperatures on your PC  -  04/18/02  EDN Design Ideas:  The low-cost circuit in Figure 1 allows you to track four remote temperatures with thermistor sensors through the parallel port on your PC.  This four-zone thermometer instrument has a temperature range of –40 to +90°C and a resolution of better than ±1°C.  You can calibrate its accuracy to within 1°C over a 0 to 50°C span and within 3°C over a –40 to +90°C span.  Thermistors are low-cost, passive, rugged components, making them a good choice for temperature sensing.  The signal-conditioning hardware in Figure 1 performs a simple voltage division to partially linearize the thermistors.   Design by Clayton Grantham

Transfer data frames over asynchronous RS-232C lines  -  01/15/98 EDN Design Ideas:  The asynchronous RS-232C interface is a simple, low-cost option for interconnecting processor-based systems.  In many applications, you need to transfer variable-size messages.  However, the character-oriented RS-232C protocol offers no direct mechanism for transferring messages as self-contained packets.  The method described here uses an obscure feature found in most UART devices to indicate packet boundaries.  The feature is the capability to transmit and recognize the "Break" character.   Design by SK SHENOY, NAVAL PHYSICAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC LAB, KOCHI, INDIA

TSR Logs Assembler & Compiler Errors in File  -  04/27/95 EDN Design Ideas:  if you use a PC to develop software for embedded systems, you probably still use good, old MS-DOS for most of your processing, because most compilers, assemblers, and linkers don't run under MS Windows.  If you're developing a sizable program, you probably use automated procedures such as batch files or "make" files to build and rebuild your target program.  When you use batch files or make files, capturing the PC's screen output in a disk file is more convenient than sitting around, watching everything endlessly scroll by on the screen Design by John Santic, Computer Consultant, Frederick, MD
