Hints and kinks for USB decoding - 7-Feb-02 Issue of EDN The USB
is a serial data-transmission system that uses cables to connect peripheral
equipment to PCs. All new computers have two orUSB receptacles, and the
predictions are that they will replace most of the legacy receptacles on older
PCs. The 1.0 and 1.1 standards for USB were for 1.5 and 12 Mbps at low- and
full-speed rates, respectively..... [Design Idea by Bert Erickson, Fayetteville,

Improved PL Tone Decoder - A significant amount of interest has been
generated since my last article on a PL tone board. Because of this interest I
decided to improve on the old PL tone design. Figure 1 is an inexpensive PL tone
generator with significantly improved performance. It has a much more stable tone
frequency as well as the elimination of the loading problem on the output. The
transistor used in the old circuit would cause the tone frequency to change at
high levels. This month's circuit eliminates all those problems..... [Radio

LFSR provides encryption - 13-Sep-01 Issue of EDN LFSRs
(linear-feedback shift registers] find extensive use in cryptography. For example,
the cryptographic algorithms in the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications]
mobile-phone system rely on the use of LFSRs. An LFSR comprises a register
containing a sequence of bits and a feedback function..... [Design Idea by

NTE789 Stereo Decoder - The NTE789, a monolithic silicon integrated
circuit, is a stereo multiplex decoder intended for FM multiplex systems.
This stereo multiplex decoder requires only one low–inductance tuning coil
(requires only one adjustment for complete alignment), provides automatic stereo
switching, energizes a stereo indicator lamp, and operates from a wide range of
voltage supplies. ….(design added 11/08) |

Rotary encoder mates with digital potentiometer - 6-Mar-03 Issue of EDN
In developing electronic systems, designers look for products or ideas that may
benefit from the better performance, smaller size, lower cost, and improved
reliability that an IC can offer. Toward that end, the digital potentiometer
emerged as an alternative to its mechanical counterpart, the mechanical
potentiometer..... [Design Idea by Peter Khairolomour, Analog Devices, San Jose,
