Multiplexer Amplifiers form large, multiplane-multiplexer structures - 12/26/02 EDN-Design Ideas - The variety of video sources available to a home-video-switching system has grown from a few composite inputs to many multisignal sources. These sources include cable, HDTV, satellite dishes, VCR, DVD, video games in broadcast, and multi-PC or graphic KVM (keyboard-video-mouse] applications. Each requires an N×M-to-1 multiplexer, in which M is the number of sources and N is the number of c Design by Bill Stutz, Maxim Integrated Products, Sunnyvale, CA Multiplexer Creates Mixed Signal Scope Input - 01/16/97 EDN-Design Ideas - When you work with mixed-signal designs, it's often useful to view the timing of several analog and digital channels on the scope at once. Multiplexer enables pseudomultidrop RS-232 transmission - 09/28/00 EDN-Design Ideas - RS-232 communications with oneµC and more than one remote system can be problematic, because mostµCs contain only one UART, which provIdeas an interface between synchronous and asynchronous ports. Multiplexers convert Deep FIFO buffer to bidirectional - 12/04/97 EDN-Design Ideas - Interfaces to digital data recorders often require deep FIFO buffers to match the system's data rate to the recorder rate. Sometimes, a second set of FIFO buffers in the opposite direction handles playback data. Doubling. Design by Kevin Kelley, Telephonics Corp, Farmingdale, NY
Multiplying DAC makes programmable resistor - EDN-Design Ideas - 06/24/1999 Figure 1 shows a configuration that implements a digitally programmable resistor using a quad op amp and a multiplying DAC. The circuit is equivalent to a voltage-controlled resistor. The simulated resistor has a value that reflects the ratio of a fixed resistor (R X) and a control voltage. Mutliplexing Technique Yields a Reduced-Pin-Count LED Display - 16-Oct-08 EDN-Design Ideas - Adding a few discrete components to the output lines of a microcontroller allows you to control 2–N× (N–1] LEDs using only N I/O lines Design by Saurabh Gupta and Dhananjay V Gadre, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Dwarka, New Delhi, India
PIC Based RS485 Multiplexer - Recently, I had to design a circuit real quick that transmitted 4 parallel TTL data bits over 350m of twisted pair cable. I needed to feed in four parallel data bits at one end, and get 4 parallel data bits out the other end, completely transparent to the transmitting and receiving circuits __ Designed by David L. Jones

RS-232C Multiplexer Serves as Multiport Adapter - 03/01/96 EDN-Design Ideas - Multiport RS-232C PC add-on boards are intended for intensive multichannel communication. Therefore, each serial port has its own transmission controller. If your application doesn't need interrupt-driven service, and polling the devices through RS-232C channels one after another is sufficient, then you can use a single controller with switched input and output signals instead of installing a costly multiport adapter. Scanmate - Audio Activated Recorder - ScanMate connects between your scanner and tape recorders (via the recorder's microphone or auxiliary input and its remote start jack). __ Designed by Tony van Roon VA3AVR
Solid-State Flasher Has Short-Circuit Protection - 01/16/97 EDN-Design Ideas - The circuit in Figure 1 switches an inductive or resistive grounded load using a bootstrapped, n-channel, power MOSFET. The circuit features short-circuit, reverse-polarity, and transient-input-voltage-spike protection. The input voltage, VDD, can vary from about 18 to 30V, and the circuit can handle as much as approximately 10A with proper heat sinking of the FET. The circuit flashes at a rate of about 100 flashes/minute, with a duty cycle of about 47%. You can use this circuit as a solid-state flasher for vehicles with 24V nominal-power systems. Design by Navdhish Gupta, TDF Corp, Naperville, IL
The Capacitance Multiplier - The power supply for the original 1969 JLH design included a form of capacitance multiplier to reduce the amount of voltage ripple on the supply rail. The capacitance multiplier circuit has been developed further, by Rod Elliott of Elliot Sound Products, and the results published as Project 15 at the ESP Audio Pages. The modified circuit is suitable for both the original 1969 JLH amplifier (using only the positive half of the circuit) and the 1996 update. The design considerations for the capacitance multiplier, its benefits, and a comparison with voltage regulators are included in the Project article. __

Voltage Reference Stabilizes Current Sink - 18-Feb-10 EDN-Design Ideas - Produce a stable current for long-term component testing - Analog circuits for long-term testing of passive components, such as 0.1%-tolerant resistors or high-intensity white LEDs, often require a constant current.
