Electronic Lock (Bill Bowden) -  The digital lock shown below uses 4 common logic ICs to allow controlling a relay by entering a 4 digit number on a keypad. The first 4 outputs from the CD4017 decade counter (pins 3,2,4,7) are gated....(added 05/07)
Embedded processor directly drives LCD -  9-Jan-03 Issue of EDN  Driving a bare LCD does not necessarily require specialized interface circuitry or peripherals.  This Design Idea describes an alternative drive scheme, which you can easily implement using the general-purpose outputs of a microcontroller. Many embedded-system applications need to interact with a user by displaying simple numeric or alphanumeric characters.... [Design Idea by Daniel Malik, Motorola, Czech Republic]
Emissions killers Trap Common Mode Currents -  03/02/98 EDN-Design Ideas  - Unshielded twisted-pair cable that is transformer-coupled to a digital system can easily act as a radiating antenna because of common-mode currents induced by unwanted stray coupling from the digital portions of the system.…File contains many circuits, please scroll to find this one.... [Design Idea by Glen Chenier, Fujitsu Network Communications, Richardson, TX]
Emulate SPI signals with a digital I/O card -  17-Sep-09 Issue of EDN  Four I/O lines let you test microcontroller-based products.... [Design Idea by Andy Street, Autoliv Electronics, Lowell, MA]
Enabling Redundancy In Multi-Gigabit Links with DS40mb200 Mux/Buffer -  National Semiconductor Application Note  (app note added 2/06)
Encoder and PC make complete motor-control system -  12-Dec-02 Issue of EDN This Design Idea combines a simple ISA-bus-resident interface circuit; a garden-variety PC; a high-resolution optical shaft encoder; and a PWM-controlled, 0.05-hp, brushed, permanent-magnet dc motor to make a high-precision and high-power motion-control system. The system sequences the precise rotation of an evacuated steel bell jar several feet in diameter, such as those used in molecular-beam.... [Design Idea by Steve Woodward, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC]
Encrypted routines impede hackers, protect licenses -  4-Apr-02 Issue of EDN  The use of public-key-encrypted algorithms within licensed applications can prevent hackers from cracking the licensed algorithms. Moreover, you can use them to disable licensed features that a user doesn't purchase. Licensing schemes eventually arrive at some critical decision point at which an algorithm decides whether the user is entitled to run that application.... [Design Idea by Lawrence Arendt, Oak Bluff, MB, Canada]
Envelope follower combines fast response, low ripple -  26-Dec-02 Issue of EDN  Envelope followers extract amplitude information from complex audio waveforms. The resulting dc voltage often drives nonlinear stages, such as voltage-controlled amplifiers or filters. You must make a careful trade-off between the speed of response to a rapidly changing input signal and the amount of ripple in the dc output that you can tolerate.... [Design Idea by Harry Bissell, Royal Oak, MI]
Envelope Tracker Quells Jitter -  07/07/94 EDN-Design Ideas  Fig 1's envelope tracking circuit solves the problem of receiving ac-coupled NRZ data over a coaxial data link. Because the spectral content of the NRZ data approaches dc (even with alternate frame inversion], the signal tends to integrate in any ac-coupled stage preceding the zero-crossing detector, despite the low cutoff frequencies. Thus, the dc level of the received data wanders, changing the relative switching point at the comparator....[Design Idea added 3/03] EDN is migrating links.
