Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • Battery Free LED Flasher
LED flashers have been used for a wide variety of applications.  Some flasher units have been used in food and hardware stores, to draw attention to sale items and are often attached to boxes which dispense product discount coupons. Typically, as the illustration below depicts, these simple units have a red LED, on each side of the housing.  Inside, is a battery and flasher circuit
    ....
CD strobe scope -  This is a strobe scope. The disc is rotating but it looks still.  (added 10/05)
Cellular Phone calling Detector -  Flashes a LED when detecting an incoming call.  Powered by one 1.5V cell  (added 4/05)
Christmas Decoration -  This project flashes 18 LEDs at three different rates and you can use these to create a Christmas decoration of your choice. The circuit is kept simple (and cheap!) by using the 4060B IC which is a counter and oscillator (clock) in one package. The circuit requires a 9V supply, such as a PP3 battery.... [Designed by John Hewes]
Circuit forms fast, portable light pulser -  16-Oct-03 Issue of EDN  The absence of a fast one-shot multivibrator in the entire TTL family, as well as the low-voltage swing and unwieldy supply requirements of ECL, drove us to exploit the fast transition times and low propagation.... [Design Idea by SK Kaul and IK Kaul, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai, India]

Clap Relay -  Clap sensitive on-off Relay.  3V Battery operated, small portable unit, (added 6/06)
Color Organ -  I have had many requests for this circuit. It was a very popular unit years ago. The basic idea of the project is to make different colored bulbs light at different frequencies of music. The circuit connects to the speaker outputs of your stereo …. [Circuit Design by Randy Linscott]
Color Organ -  This unit uses a PIC16F84 with an 8 bit A/D.  The signal from both stereo channels is combined and digitized.  Each of 5 frequency bands is processed using a 16 point FFT.  Then the level of each channel is output as PWM (pulse width modulation) to a set of solid state relays.…. [Luhan Monat - Mesa Arizona]
Constant Brightness LED Stroboscope: for Measuring the Speed of Small Motors  -  For measuring the speed of small motors.  The rotary switch is available for $5.00USD as of 2003 from DigiKey under part number EG1951-ND or EG1952-ND. It is a real pain to operate this circuit without a proper switch. You can put multiple 4017 ring counters in series to reduce the duty cycle in order to obtain a more focussed strobe image but you will have to increase L or by using a regulator to power..... [Circuit by Stepan Novotill]
Count To Ten With Lights -  The circuit presented this month is a basic configuration of the very versatile 4017 IC Chip. In the most common use of the IC, it will turn on 10 separate outputs sequentially. Typically, the circuit is used to turn on a LED….....
Current-Domain Electrostatic Amplifier for Stax Omega II Headphones -  This equipment can change the analog signal of the music and so on into the flash of the lamp. I made this circuit based on the idea of Mr.Yoram Peres. It is possible to make compactly if using the IC of the exclusive use to display the level of the signal.....…(Circuit design added 04/05/06)
