Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :

Medical_Corona_Monitor - The circuit is powered by +5v and has an on-board voltage regulator as a reference voltage.  The current from a reversed biased photodiode is converted into a voltage using an op amp circuit.  That output voltage is fed to a voltage comparator circuit.  Included is an adjustment in the current to voltage converter, to calibrate the installed circuit . . . Medical Fluid Detector - A simple 40KHz 12v peak to peak square wave signal generator, using a 555 timer oscillator, was fed to the metal needle and the whole vertical indexing system, which was electrically isolated from everything else.  On the receiver end, a copper foil electrode, which was designed to fit snugly on the bottom of a plastic cup, acted as a holder for the fluid container. . . . Heart rate measurement from fingertip. Part 1. Schematic - Introduction Heart rate measurement indicates the soundness of the human cardiovascular system.  This project demonstrates a technique to measure the heart rate by sensing the change in blood volume in a finger artery while the heart is pumping the

Heart rate measurement from fingertip. Part 2. Software - Part 1.  Schematic Software The firmware does all the control and computation operation.  In order to save the power, the sensor module is not activated continuously.  Instead, it is turned on for 15 sec only once the start button is pressed.  The

Heart Rate Monitor based on a dual op-amp IC - Strictly speaking, this simple circuit shouldn't work! How could anyone expect an ordinary light dependent resistor photo cell to 'see' through a fingertip in natural daylight and detect the change in blood flow as the heart pulsates? The secret is a high gain circuit, based on a dual op amp IC which can be either the low power LM358 or the JFET TL072.  __ Learning Electronics

Inductive sensing with left-handed antenna for biomedical applications - 05/15/14 EDN-Design Ideas Could an inductive sensor help assay biological and other substances? A left-handed  (LH) antenna based biosensor is developed to investigate the near-field electromagnetic interaction between antenna and sample with different dielectric properties.  These dielectric properties can be determined by analyzing the electromagnetic coupling between the antenna and the test samples without labeling or chemical reaction.  It has the advantages of real-time detection, small feature size, reduced sample volume, and minor environmental disturbance.  Such an antenna sensor can be effectively used to measure both liquid and solid biological samples.   Design by Chii-Wann Lin

Lie Detector - Here's a simple lie detector that can be built in a few minutes, but can be incredibly useful when you want to know if someone is really telling you the truth.  It is not as sophisticated as the ones the professionals use, but it works.  It works by measuring skin resistance, which goes down when you lie __ Designed by Aaron Cake

Lie Detector - The circuit diagram of the Lie Detector is shown above.   It consists of three transistors  (TR1 to TR3) , a capacitor  (C1) , two lights or LEDs  (L1 & L2) , five resistors  (R1 to R5) , and a variable resistor  (VR1) .  This circuit is based on the fact that a person's skin resistance changes when they sweat  (sweating because they're lying) .  Dry skin has a resistance of about 1 million ohms, whereas the resistance of moist skin is reduced by a factor of ten or more. __ Designed by  © Hack Canada

Low Power Pulse Oximeter & EKG Reference Design - This reference design details non-invasive optical plethysmography – pulsoximetry – using the MSP430FG437 microcontroller  (MCU) . The pulsoxi-meter consists of a peripheral probe combined with the MCU displaying the oxygen saturation and pulse rate on a LCD glass. The same sensor is used for both heart-rate detection and pulsoxi-metering in this application. A custom LabVIEW GUI has been developed for this application to display the heart signal, heart rate and % SaO2 number. All the necessary files and steps to get this GUI up and running have been provided along with this report.__ Texas Instruments

Medical timer warns when pills are due - 05/10/01 EDN-Design Ideas Some people need to take medication at precise, regular intervals.  When you're in a hospital, a medical staff is present to ensure that you take your medication on time.  But when you're taking medication at home, you must frequently look at the clock-a clear annoyance.  When my wife was pregnant, she needed to take medication every two hours from 8 am to 10 pm.  To help her time the two-hour intervals, I built the battery-powered circuit in Figure 1.  The circuit derives its power from a 9V PP3 battery.  All the ICs are CMOS -based; the low power consumption of the circuit allows one-week autonomy.  When you press the start button, BP1, a two-hour delay commences.   Design by J Terrade
