Power Supply Fits into Small Spaces: 11/13/03 EDN Design
Ideas / (added 1/05) The demand for negative-voltage power supplies is increasing with the popularity of applications for
portable devices. It can be expensive and relatively complicated to generate a negative supply from a positive input source, especially when
the design requires both positive and negative outputs. Figure 1 shows a simple and cost-effective solution that combines a voltage inverter
and a voltage ...... |

Quasiresonant converter uses a simple CMOS IC: 04/15/04
EDN Design Ideas / (added 1/05) Figure 1 shows a flyback power supply that has low noise and uses a simple CMOS 4093 IC for
its control. The electrical noise of a converter arises mainly when current switches on. Diode recovery and charging parasitic capacitances
create high di/dt, which is the main cause of noise. The converter in Figure 1 (pg 76) has a low noise level, because it slowly switches
current on at nearly zero...... |

Quickly discharge Power supply capacitors: 07/05/01 EDN
Design Ideas / (added 1/05) A perennial challenge in power-supply design is the safe and speedy discharge, or "dump," at
turn-off of the large amount of energy stored in the postrectification filter capacitors. This energy, CV 2 /2, can usually reach tens of
joules. If you let the capacitors self-discharge, dangerous voltages can persist on unloaded electrolytic filter capacitors for hours or even
days.... |

Recommended Land Pad Design Assembly and Rework Guidelines for DC/DC µModule in LGA
Package: AN100 - Linear Technology - AN100 describes the best practice approach for the use of the LTC µModule. Emphasis is placed
on getting the best results in the customer application. AN100 is a general guideline with 5 areas of interest-manufacturing considerations,
PCB design guidelines, screen printing processes, package to board assembly, and rework. Each area contains details to improve the workability
of the µModule. Specific recommendations are also made to improve stencil design and package reliability. |

RMS to DC Converter is Accurate and Stable: 09/14/95
EDN-Design Ideas / (added 6/06) Combining the well-known true rms-to-dc circuit with a simple S/H circuit eliminates offset errors, which
increases accuracy and temperature stability. The circuit in Fig 1 uses a low-cost analog multiplier, IC1; an integrator, IC3A, R5, and C1;
and an analog inverter, IC2, R3, R4, and D1 to convert the analog VIN into a true-rms dc VOUT. The input signal can be ac, dc, or a
combination. With an input-signal range of 0 to 2V, the circuit can handle ac signals with crest factors up to 5. Unfortunately, offsets in
IC1 and IC3A contribute significant error to the circuit. Moreover, these offsets drift with temperature. To remove these offset errors, the
circuit performs self-calibration with the help.... |
