Minimizing Switching Regulator Residue in Linear Regulator Outputs -  AN101 Linear Technology Linear regulators are commonly employed to post-regulate switching regulator outputs. Benefits include improved stability, accuracy, transient response and lowered output impedance. Ideally, these performance gains would be accompanied by markedly reduced switching regulator....(appnote added 1/06)

Monolithic Switching Regulator with 100µV Output Noise -  AN70 Linear TechnologyThis publication details circuitry and applications considerations for the LT1533 low noise switching regulator. Eleven DC/DC converter circuits are presented, some offering <100µV output noise in a 100MHz bandwidth. Tutorial sections detail low noise DC/DC design, measurement, probing and layout techniques, and magnetics selection.

MOSFET LDO Voltage Regulator - This circuit has excellent voltage regulation, due to positive feedback through R2 however the circuit must be started up.  This is done by Q4 and Q5.  If the circuit does not need to be started under load, Q4, Q5, and R6 can be deleted.  You must then place a 1 meg resistor between the source and drain of Q1.  C2 slightly speeds response to rapid load changes and can be changed in value or deleted. [Designed by Andrew R. Morris]
MOSFET shunt regulator substitutes for series regulator -  25-Nov-04 Issue of EDN  You would normally use a series linear regulator or a dc/dc converter to obtain 3V dc from a higher supply. However, when breadboarding a concept, you may be able to use a shunt regulator, especially if a series regulator of the correct voltage is unavailable. The MOSFET in Figure 1 can replace a zener diode in a shunt regulator and provide lower output impedance than a zener diode.... [Design Idea by Stuart R Michaels, SRM Consulting]
Motor Accu Lader  (Dutch language) -  …. [Tony van Roon's circuit]
Negative Flyback with V in 12 V & V out-5 V -  This reference design is for a -12V at 1A Negative Flyback Converter. The UC3572 converts a positive input voltage to a regulated negative output voltage. The chip is optimized for use in a single inductor negative flyback switching converter employing an external PMOS switch.  (added 3/05)

Obtain higher voltage from a buck regulator -  29-May-03 Issue of EDN  Several semiconductor vendors'current-mode buck controllers have input-voltage ranges of 30 to 36V but have output-voltage ranges from the reference voltage to approximately 6V.  This output-voltage constraint arises from the common-mode-voltage limitation of the current-sense amplifier. In real-world applications, the power-supply designer must be able to generate high output voltage for printe.... [Design Idea by Ajmal Godil]
Performance Enhancement Techniques for 3-Terminal Regulators -  AN2 Linear TechnologyThis application note describes a number of enhancement circuit techniques used with existing 3-terminal regulators which extend current capability, limit power dissipation, provide high voltage output, operate from 110VAC or 220VAC without the need to switch transformer windings, and many other usefu application ideas.
PLL-based converter controls light source -  07/02/98 EDN-Design Ideas....Using the circuit in Figure 1 , you can digitally control the light intensity of a lamp. The control loop is based on a PLL, in which the VCO comprises a light-to-frequency converter  (TSL220) coupled to a light source that derives....PDF has several circuits, please scroll to find this one.... [Design Idea by MASSIMO GOTTARDI, ITC-IRST, TRENTO, ITALY]
Positive regulator makes dual negative output converter -  26-Jun-03 Issue of EDN  Some systems, such as optical networks, requirethan one negative voltage. A common procedure is to boost the main negative supply of -5V to -10V and then reduce it with a linear regulator to -9V. The -5V itself comes from a positive supply, typically 5 or 12V. Independently creating each of the two negative voltages requires the use of two switching-regulator ICs.... [Design Idea by Keith Szolusha, Linear Technology Corp, Milpitas, CA]
Positive regulator makes negative dc/dc converter -  26-Dec-02 Issue of EDN  Power-supply designers can choose from a plethora of available positive buck regulators that can also serve as negative boost dc/dc converters. Some buck regulators have a negative-feedback reference voltage expressly for this purpose, but ICs that have positive-reference feedback voltages far outnumber these negative-feedback regulators....
