Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • Lighthouse LED Flasher
This was originally designed for a model in a HO train set.  It simulates the behavior of the light from a lighthouse.  The LED intensity gradually increases, then flashes with a bright light and finally decreases slowly in intensity.

LED Chaser (Aaron Cake) -  I don't know why, but people like blinking lights. You see LED chasers everywhere, in TV shows (Knight Rider), movies, and store windows.  This schematic is my version of a simple 10 LED chaser. There is no 555 timer used because.....(added 04/03/02)
LED Chaser (Jose Pino) -  A sequential light chaser using the PIC 12F629…..
LED Chaser II (Jose Pino) -  LED Chaser Version 2, Improved. Use it as "LED chaser" or "Third Brake Light". (circuit added 1/05)
LED Christmas lights -  Schematic only, no circuit description
LED Clock with Timer & Solar Panel Regulator -  This is a combination digital clock timer and solar panel charge controller used to maintain a deep cycle battery from a solar panel.....
LED Counter (Seiichi Inoue) -  This circuit is the 12-bit binary counter which used 4040B. The number of the pulses of the input can be confirmed by seeing it with the eyes by putting the light-emitting diode to the output of the counter....[App Note]
LED Current Regulator - Here is a circuit that will allow LED's to glow at a constant brightness throughout battery life or varying power supply voltage.  This circuits is capable of saturating, allowing the battery voltage to get within 0.3 volts of the LED voltage before the LEDs start to dim.  This is far superior to just using a current limiting resistor. [Designed by Andrew R. Morris]
LED Decibel Meter -  The circuit below responds to sound pressure levels from about 60 to 70 dB. The sound is picked up by an 8 ohm speaker, amplified by a transistor stage and one LM324 op-amp section. You can also use a dynamic microphone but I found the speaker was more sensitive. The remaining 3 sections of the LM324 quad op-amp are used as....
LED Dice -  Has slow down tumbling action. This project has two advantages over previous dice circuits. It produces a realistic readout as well as a 'slow-down' feature.  These combine to make it one of our most popular games projects.  As can been seen in the photo, the 7 LEDs are positioned.....(diagram added 2/07)
LED Dimmer Circuit -  Find out how to put together a simple but efficient PWM dimmer circuit for LEDs…. [REUK - Renewable Energy UK website]
LED dimmer uses only two lines -  21-Mar-02 Issue of EDN  The circuit in Figure 1provides 32 steps of brightness control-from 0 to 100%-for a backlight or instrument panel, using just two general-purpose-microprocessor signals. In addition, the circuit requires little board space, because it uses only three SOT-23s and one µMax package..... [Design Idea by Jerry Wasinger, WallyWare Inc, Norcross, GA]
LED Display Controller -  ASCII format (Circuit design added 11/06)
LED display Digital Voltmeter -  This digital voltmeter is ideal to use for measuring the output voltage of your DC power supply. It includes a 3.5-digit LED display with a negative voltage indicator. It measures DC voltages from 0 to 199.9V with a resolution of 0.1V. The voltmeter is based on single ICL7107 chip and may be fitted on a small 3cm x 7cm.....(electronic design added 6/07)
LED doubles as emitter and detector -  16-Aug-01 Issue of EDN  Every junction diode exhibits some degree of photosensitivity when it receives light comprising an appropriate range of wavelengths. The spectral response of a junction diode depends on a variety of factors, including material chemistry, junction depth, and packaging. The packaging of most devices aims to inhibit sensitivity to radiant flux to maintain the intended function of the device..... [Design Idea by Kyle Holland, LI-COR Inc, Lincoln, NE]
LED Driven Tail/Brake Light Cluster -  LED driven tail/brake Light Cluster Constant current circuitry 12V Battery operation (added 3/05)
LED Driver Application for Portable Products See also DN23 -  MicroNote 1312s from Microsem.....[App Note]
LED driver combines high-speed, precision -  21-Aug-03 Issue of EDN  Applications such as turbidity measurement and densitometry require cleanly pulsed light sources with stable amplitudes. The LED driver in Figure 1 illuminates retinal neurons in a biological experiment that has similar requirements. For a given LED at a given current, the intensity is stable, so switching a stable current is a simple and effective way to obtain the needed function..... [Design Idea by Richard Cappels, Mesa, AZ]
